Hello and welcome to Mrs. Avina's Biology Class.
First about myself, I am a mother of two daughters who are currently in their first and second year of college. I have been married for over twenty years to a wonderful man who is dedicated to lovingly support our family while we are all in school. I have enjoyed working as an x-ray technologist for more than twenty years and feel very fortunate to be able to pursue my life long dream of becoming a Biology teacher.
This semester we will be exploring the Body Systems and how they function and interact with our environment. We will start by studying about the structure and function of the Immunization system. While we learn about immunization, we will also explore how the Native American tribes were affected by the the rapid spread of disease during the American colonization. At the end of the you our students will create posters about diseases and their transmission and prevention. By exploring how the Native American people have been affected by these disease during colonization become more culturally aware about our Native American tribes here in the Temecula Valley.

The intent is for this site to become a place that I can reach out to and interact with the education community beyond my limited personal location. Beyond this, I would like to be able to integrate, if not this blog, a separate blog into my everyday classroom teaching. It is my belief that as teachers we need to be able to keep up with our students and right now our students are on the cutting edge of technology usage. We need to integrate this technology into the classroom daily as a means of making not only the information relevant but also the method of delivery. I hope the tools and skills from this course will help me do this in an effective manner.
I have a B.A. in Comparative Literature and Writing, so it goes without saying that I LOVE TO READ! My favorites tend to be the American classics such as: The Great Gatsby, The Sound and the Fury, Great Expectations, Wuthering Heights etc.

I
am committed to a positive learning environment that advocates
diversity, understanding, and acceptance. Where ignorance and
misunderstanding exist, I see a challenging teaching opportunity.
Only through learning are we able to better ourselves and only
through understanding can we progress forward.
My
degree is in Teaching English with an emphasis in ESL and essay
composition. Because I received my degree in Teaching English, many
believe that I had an inherent ability to be amazing in English. This
was not the case. I did not have the ability to speak or even write
anything in the English language until fifth grade and continued to
struggle throughout middle school even into high school. School was a
challenge for me but challenges are no match for an individual who
refuses to give up. My hard work allowed me to graduate high school
and continue on to a four year university, but I have never forgotten
all those long hours. Those hours have only fueled my desire to
teach.
